As a piece of public furniture, this work negotiates the openness of sitting directly on the ground, and the use for a bench as an intermediary. Sitting in-between a picnic mat and a bench, a play on these typologies brings out the social aspirations of people in public spaces. The postures it allows reminds one of “western” idyllic summer scenes of laying on the lawn, at the same time, “eastern” conventions of sitting on the floor. This mix of expatriate influence and local character is perhaps the distinctive social fabric of Holland Village.
